Pandas version checks

  • [X] I have checked that this issue has not already been reported.

  • [X] I have confirmed this bug exists on the latest version of pandas.

  • [ ] I have confirmed this bug exists on the main branch of pandas.

Reproducible Example

import pandas as pd
pos_surface_untreated=pd.read_table('POSCAR-surface',header=None,sep='\\s+')

Issue Description

When I write my input file POSCAR-surface as:

surf111_2x2 1.00000000000000 1.0000 2.0000

,the code will warning me with "Error tokenizing data. C error: Expected 1 fields in line 3, saw 2". But if I changes my input file POSCAR-surface as

surf111_2x2 1.00000000000000 1.0000 , the code will run successfully.

Expected Behavior

I hope this code can give me a Dataframe as this 0 1 0 surf111_2x2 NaN 1 1.00000000000000 NaN 2 1.0000 2.0000
